The Cardinals is the story of a show within a show.

Three cardinals are on tour, using a large puppet theatre to tell a history of the world. Their production runs seamlessly from Bible stories through The Crusades to contemporary Middle Eastern politics and, ultimately, The Apocalypse.

The cardinals’ show, though naive and unwittingly hilarious, is also wonderfully beautiful and seductive. Backstage however things are more frantic and fractious. The cardinals are assisted by a young Muslim Stage Manager, she is overworked and their scripts aren’t exactly the same. They are all doing their best, but they are only human…

The Cardinals is about faith and belief. It is playful, thought-provoking and thoroughly entertaining.

“..busy and enjoyably good humoured”
The Times

“..funny and alert, […] an intelligent, cleverly performed evening.”
The Guardian

” At turns hilarious, ironic and surprisingly human. “
The Public Reviews

“..irreverent but knowledgeable and visually delicious”
The Stage

“..a wonderfully thoughtful and intelligent piece, alive with colour and theatricality, childlike humour and troubled humanity”
Exeunt
