Christ over Columbus
The Cardinals are on a missionary tour of North America.
After proselytising to the good folks at The Public Theater, New York, (as part of the Under The Radar Festival), then visiting the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, as part of the Chicago International Puppet Festival, then performing at The Long Center, Lafayette IN, for the Three Stories Festival (for Purdue Convocations), we arrived this week in the State capital of Ohio – Columbus. Our venue, the Wexner Arts Center, is an impressive gathering of facilities on the enormous Ohio State University campus. The final Wexner performance will take place later today before we decamp for the fifth and final week of this North American leg of our world tour.
Next week we make a welcome return to World Stage 2015 at The Harbourfront, Toronto – a city that Stan’s Cafe have very fond memories of from our visits with The Cleansing of Constance Brown and Of All The People In All The World back in May 2009.

food futures
I’m currently directing a group of young makers in this project commissioned by the The New Optimists / Science Forward. The work, broadly titled ‘Narrativium’ is a response to the ‘Birmingham 2050 Scenarios’, a remarkable dossier which incorporates scenario-planning to understand how we can imagine and prepare for possible futures; asking big questions about resourcing and sustainability models. How can a City of a million people continue to feed itself in the face of resource depletion?, environmental change?, political unrest?, etc.
Jenny Lee, Kat Hannaford, Sipho Eric Dube and Carl Sealeaf make up the devising/performing team.
Food Futures is a work-in-progress performance designed to continue the conversation. It takes place in the Foyle Studio, mac, Birmingham at 7.30pm, 27th September 2014. The performance will be followed by a Question and Answer discussion, chaired by Kate Cooper of The New Optimists.

Finger, Trigger, Bullet, Gun
Rehearsals have started for a latest offering from Stan’s Cafe; “Finger, Trigger, Bullet, Gun”. Unusually for Stan, this is a commisssioned play, penned by Serbian writer, director and former MP. Nenad Prokic. “Finger, Trigger, Bullet, Gun” concerns itself with the political manœverings which led to the assassination of Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo, 1914 – an action credited with igniting World War I.
FTBG opens on the evening of 28th June, the 100th anniversary of Gavrilo Princip’s fateful and fatal shooting of the Austro-Hungarian Crown Prince and his wife. It will be presented by the LIFT Festival’s as part of its After A War programme. A week later the show will feature at BE Fest, Birmingham in a double bill with “Next Door”, by Danish company Out Of Balanz
In image below director James and performer Jack Trow are seen constructing the set. As part of a parallel education project pupils at Washwood Heath School in Birmingham have contributed to the process by painting and dedicating 19,240 domino-sized monuments to each of the soldiers of the British Fourth Army killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1st July 1916.
