Stan’s Cafe presents
The Anatomy of Melancholy
Written four hundred years ago by librarian and vicar Robert
Burton, The Anatomy of Melancholy has been described as ‘the
greatest book ever written’.
Its 1500 pages are full of cutting-edge science, maids vomiting
pebbles, priests defecating in ditches, lovers unrequited, friends
who can’t be parted, plus enormous expansive long lists of every
food, herb, location, activity or occupation that can bring on or cure melancholy in any one of its many forms.
In their compelling stage adaptation, Stan’s Cafe transform this
extraordinary book into a grand cure for melancholy that reveals
how closely 17th-century approaches to life and depression resemble
our own.

TwilightOfTheFreakinGods
Join Stan’s Cafe for a very special new production.
Twilightofthefreakingods celebrates five glorious years @AEHarris. It
will be the last performance at the venue before it ‘downsizes’ and
we are planning to say goodbye in spectacular fashion.
Twilightofthefreakingods is a large-scale theatrical experiment that
slowly unfolds over 255 minutes with a cast of 13 ranging over more
than 2000 square metres of performance space. It is a piece of visual
theatre (very) loosely inspired by Götterdämmerung with the wonderful
Nina West (The Cleansing of Constance Brown soundtrack) replacing
Wagner at the sonic controls.
The cast will be drawn from companies who have performed @AEHarris
over the last five years. There will be no rehearsals, instead the
cast will work from instructions and timetables unaware of what
anyone else in the room will be doing. It will be an extraordinary
occasion.
As the show is both a celebration and unusually long, the bar will be
open throughout serving flaming cocktails alongside snacks and more
familiar drinks. Both cabaret and raked seating will be available for
you to either engross yourself in the show or discuss it as it
unfolds with your friends. You can change your viewing angle whenever
you wish to concentrate on whatever strand of action you find most
absorbing. Whatever happens it will be an event about which you will
always want to say “and I was there”.
There are just two performances:
Thursday 10th October 19:00 – 23:15
and
Saturday 12th October 19:45 – 24:00
Audience numbers are limited to 100 per night. To book please click
here to visit our secure on-line Box Office and join us for this
unique event.
Twilightofthefreakingods is produced in association with Reel Access
and Flatpack.

Vesalius – reposted
Journalist Paul Klaric has kindly posted me this updated link to a TV feature he made for ABC’s ‘SA Stateline‘ in June 2010. The feature was first broadcast in South Australia in advance of the opening performance of Vesalius – a Requiem at RiAus, Adelaide. Originally produced by our company The Resurrectionists at the Old Operating Theatre Museum, London in 1996, Vesalius – a Requiem was revived by Various People Inc. with Cheryl Pickering directing and Richard Chew (composer/bass-baritone), Philip Griffin (baritone) and myself performing.

This is a trailer of the Stan's Cafe show The Cardinals.
Three Cardinals in crimson robes are on a mission of evangelism. They are on tour with a puppet show they have made that sets out their abbreviated and extrapolated reading of the bible.
The reading is abbreviated as it stages only a relatively small number of scenes key to their message of redemption; it is extrapolated as its reading of the book of Acts and Revelation include elements of contemporary history. Our theatre show is slightly bigger than the Cardinal's own puppet show our real audience (as opposed to their fictional audience), can see what is happening in the wings, how they collaborate and argue, how they are both aided by and in conflict with their young female Muslim stage manager.
The show can next be seen in Edinburgh at Greyfriars Kirk 19th – 23rd August at 12 noon. Please note there is no show on Thursday 22nd. Details and tickets via https://www.edfringe.com/whats-on/theatre/cardinals

The Cardinals is the story of a show within a show.
Three cardinals are on tour, using a large puppet theatre to tell a history of the world. Their production runs seamlessly from Bible stories through The Crusades to contemporary Middle Eastern politics and, ultimately, The Apocalypse. The cardinals’ show, though naive and unwittingly hilarious, is also wonderfully beautiful and seductive. Backstage however things are more frantic and fractious. The cardinals are assisted by a young Muslim Stage Manager, she is overworked and their scripts aren’t exactly the same. They are all doing their best, but they are only human…The Cardinals is about faith and belief. It is playful, thought-provoking and thoroughly entertaining.
“..busy and enjoyably good humoured”
The Times“..funny and alert, […] an intelligent, cleverly performed evening.”
The Guardian” At turns hilarious, ironic and surprisingly human. “
The Public Reviews“..irreverent but knowledgeable and visually delicious”
The Stage“..a wonderfully thoughtful and intelligent piece, alive with colour and theatricality, childlike humour and troubled humanity”

fall with me
This is the latest video from mid-western ‘death-rock’ merchants LIAR IN WAIT. “Fall With Me” is taken from the band’s recently released “Translations of the Lost” EP. The video was filmed by John Bradburn and crew during a damp and moody twilight up at The Lickeys.
